Derrick Rose |
PG |
Memphis |
|
When you have Elton Brand, Corey
Maggette and Chris Kaman, you don't
need size. When your team leader in
assists is also your 12th leading
scorer, its time to look for a point
guard. Derrick Rose goes to LA over
Michael Beasley because the Clippers
desperately need someone to man the
point. Rose does that. |
|

 |
Michael Beasley |
PF |
Kansas State |
|
Michael Beasley is the no-brainer of
the century here. Despite not
getting the top pick in the draft,
Beasley falls to Miami at number
two. This doesn't really need an
explanation. Beasley does it all,
and should start right away for the
struggling Heat. |
|
3 |
 |
O. J. Mayo |
PG |
USC |
|
Poor OJ Mayo. He had so much hype
coming out of high school. It's
almost impossible to live up to when
you have uber-freshman Michael
Beasley putting up crazy numbers.
But Mayo gets another shot in the
pros, where he won't be expected to
put up 25 a game. He goes to
Minnesota, who is seeking the
"outside" part of the inside-outside
game. They have Al Jefferson. Mayo
will be the outside part. |

 |
Book Lopez |
PF |
Stanford |
|
After Pau Gasol left for the Lakers,
Memphis was left without a capable
big man. No longer. Brook Lopez gets
it done on both ends of the floor,
and he is the obvious choice here
for the size-deprived Grizzlies.
Don't be surprised if Lopez is
starting come November. He's NBA
ready, and on the Grizzlies, you
don't have to be great to be a
center, you just have to be big.
Lopez is both. |
|
5 |
 |
DeAndre Jordan |
C |
Texas A&M |
|
DeAndre Jordan is the second best
7-footer in the draft, and the
Bobcats are looking for somone to
complement Emeka Okafor inside.
Jordan can do that. He may not start
right away, but look for him to have
an immediate impact serving as
Okafor's replacement. |
|
6 |
 |
Jerryd Bayless |
PG |
Arizona |
|
Stephon Marbury is a distant memory
in New York. Jerryd Bayless is the
logical choice here. He's a great
player who can find the open man or
find a way to score himself. This is
just the kind of player New York
needs. |
|
7 |
 |
Eric Gordon |
SG |
Indiana |
|
The Sonics need offense, and Eric
Gordon gives them all that, and then
some. He can shoot, take it to the
hole and what I like most: get to
the line. He was second in the NCAA
in free throw attempts last year.
And he won't be asked to carry the
franchise, so the pressure is
minimal. |
|
8 |
 |
Danilo Gallinari
|
PG |
Italy |
|
The Bucks have their bangers with
Bogut and Villanueva. They have
their point with Mo Williams and
their scorer with Michael Redd. What
they don't have is someone who can
come off the bench and do everything
you want him to do. Danilo Gallinari
is the ultimate teammate. He is a
great passer, and can get open
himself. Gallinari should fit well
in Milwaukee. |
|
9 |
 |
Kevin Love
(Via trade with Chicago) |
PF |
UCLA |
|
New Jersey leapfrogs Golden State to
select All-America Kevin Love. Love
is a force in the low post with the
strength to move taller defenders.
He's an excellent passer, and don't
be suprised to see him step away
from the basket to drill a long
jumper. He's a good all-around
player, and while many expect him to
suffer in the pros, he has all the
intangibles to be a great role
player. |
|
10 |
 |
Anthony Randolph |
SF |
LSU |
|
The Warriors get Anthony Randolph
here at 10, a steal. Randolph is a
great athlete who can get up and
down the floor. Watch out if he's
guarding you, he'll swat your shot
in a hurry. Randolph may need a year
or two, but expect him to make some
serious noise in the NBA once his
time comes. |
|
11 |
 |
Chase Bundinger
(Via trade with Nets) |
SG |
Arizona |
|
Chase Budinger is a great athlete,
and has all the tools to be a superb
swingman. He's a deadeye from beyond
the arc, and has the size to shoot
over shorter defenders. He can sky
to the boards and take his man to
the hole. Budinger is a perfect fit
in Chicago. |
|
12 |
 |
D. J. Augustine |
PG |
Texas |
|
DJ Augustin is a do it all point
guard. He can score, but is a pass
first guy. He's a great passer, and
he should free up Brandon Roy, who
is now carrying the load of a point
guard while also continuing to lead
the team in scoring. Augustin is a
more capable scorer than current
point Steve Blake, and might start
immediately. |
|
13 |
 |
Kosta Koufos |
C |
Ohio State |
|
Jeff Foster was never a great
center, now he's old. Kosta Koufos
had scouts raving after his
performance with the Greek national
team. He can play with the big boys.
His super long arms are also a big
plus. The only knock on Koufos is
that he lacks toughness, but
hopefully getting to the main stage
will help amp him up. Koufos might
learn the game for a few years
before filling in for Foster. |
|
14 |
 |
Marrese Speights |
PF |
Florida |
|
Marreese Speights played center in
college, but will most likely fill
in for Mikki Moore as a power
forward in the NBA. Speights has
size and strength to muscle around
defenders in the low post. Don't
expect Speights to sink anything far
away from the hoop, though. Speights
could be one of the first five on
the floor for Sac-Town in 08. |
|
15 |
 |
Darrell Arthur |
PF |
Kansas |
|
Washington doesn't have a lot of
depth in the PF/C positions, so
adding this dynamic player from the
national championship team certainly
can't hurt. Arthur will provide a
reliable back up for Antawn Jamison.
He is a very capable player, and a
dominant low post scorer. His
athleticism is also above average. |
|
16 |
 |
Russell Westbrook |
PG |
UCLA |
|
The Houston Rockets don't have
anyone that can play the point guard
role when Rafer Alston is out of the
game. Russell Westbrook played
shooting guard in college, but the
transition to running the point
should go smoothly. Westbrook is a
great shooter, is super athletic and
finds the open man. He's also a
lockdown defender, which is never a
bad thing. |
|
17 |
 |
Nicholas
Batum |
PG |
France |
|
Toronto is an international all-star
team. Nicholas Batum is the latest
stud from overseas to join the team.
Batum is known for his great
defense. He has really long arms
that help him swipe the ball away.
He has a great jump shot, and knows
his place on the floor. Batum can
play about 4 positions on the court.
He'll fit in perfectly with Toronto. |
|
18 |
 |
Brandon Rush
(Via trade with Mavs) |
SG |
Kansas |
|
As great as Vince Carter has been,
it's hard to imagine his legs
lasting much longer. Brandon Rush is
as experienced a shooting guard as
you'll find. Rush is a great
athlete, and while many of his
points come from the three point
shot, he is also very good on fast
breaks. The one knock on Rush is the
trouble he has creating his own
shot, but he'll have a few years to
work on that and learn from one of
the best before he takes the helm. |
|
19 |
 |
Javele McGee
(Via trade with Suns, via Hawks) |
C |
Nevada |
|
Javale McGee gets his name called
here, as the Sonics look to upgrade
over current center Johan Petro.
McGee is a prolific low post scorer,
and has very good range for somone
his size. McGee may not start right
away, but don't expect him to be an
idle benchwarmer. He'll get good
minutes for the Sonics. |
|
20 |
 |
Robin Lopez |
PF |
Stanford |
|
The Nuggets awful defense was second
worst in the NBA last year, so
taking a great shot blocker only
makes sense here. Imagine Lopez and
Camby together in the paint. That
would pose a daunting task for
anyone trying to get a layup on the
Nuggets. Lopez is also a good low
post scorer. The Camby-Lopez tandem
should be a good one. |
|
21 |
 |
Chris Douglas Roberts |
SG |
Memphis |
|
Philadelphia is known for its youth
and athleticism. Why not add more?
That's what they do by selecting
Chris Douglas-Roberts. CDR may be
the steal of the draft. He is an
awesome shooter, and can score from
anywhere on the floor. CDR has an
endless bag of tricks, throwing up
unconvential shots that somehow go
in. Though he may look like a Harlem
Globetrotter on the floor,
Douglas-Roberts is just a great
basketball player. He will compete
with Willie Green for the starting
job. |
|
22 |
 |
Donte Greene |
SG |
Syracuse |
|
Grant Hill's playing days are almost
over, and that means a shooting
forward is in need in Phoenix. Donte
Greene is 6-10, but his game is that
of a shooting forward. He can shoot
the lights out and is a very good
ball handler. Greene is very
athletic as well. He made a big
splash in Syracuse, and will look to
do the same in Phoenix. |
|
23 |
 |
Ty Lawson |
PG |
North Carolina |
|
The Cavaliers need somebody to get
the ball to LeBron. Who better than
Ty Lawson? The short guard from UNC
can take defenders off the dribble
because of his quickness, but is
also deadly from 3-point land. This
will open up LeBron more, as well as
shooter Wally Szczrbiak and center
Zydrunas Ilgauskas. |
|
24 |
 |
Joe Alexander
(Via trade with Jazz) |
PF |
West Virginia |
|
The T-Wolves need all the help they
can get. Joe Alexander is a guy who
can muscle his way in down low, but
also knock down shots from outside.
He could be the next Shawn Marion,
and what team wouldn't want Marion.
Alexander is a strong passer as
well. He'll be great next to
Jefferson and Mayo. |
|
25 |
 |
Bill Walker |
PF |
Kansas State |
|
The Magic could use some depth at
the 2-guard position. Bill Walker
gives them that depth. Walker played
second fiddle to Michael Beasley all
year, and now its his time to shine.
He'll compete with Maurice Evans for
the starting job right away. I think
going to the Magic will be good for
him, because in a team loaded with
talent, he'll need to perform his
best to play, which is something
many rookies don't have to do(i.e.
Michael Beasley). Walker will play a
big role in the Magic's success,
whether it be as a starter or off
the bench. |
|
26 |
 |
Davon Jefferson |
SG |
USC |
|
Davon Jefferson provides a low post
alternative to Peja Stojakovic at
the shooting forward position. If
you put in Jefferson, you have
another great rebounder down there,
as well as someone that can get
points in the paint. Bonzi Wells
could play 2-guard, and you would
have a tough time getting
outrebounded. |
|
27 |
 |
Roy Hibbert |
PF |
Georgetown |
|
Roy Hibbert goes here on our mock.
Some had him as a top 10 pick.
Others had him in the mid-second
round. We'll split the difference
and say Hibbert goes to the Celtics
to try and help out their center
position. Right now, Kendrick
Perkins is the weakest starter on
this near All-Star team, and Hibbert
gets the nod here because Boston is
looking to win a championship within
the next two to three season. They
need to upgrade fast. |
|
28 |
 |
D. J. White
(Via trade with Lakers) |
PF |
Indina |
|
The Memphis Grizzlies already
selected Brook Lopez, but one guy
may not be enough to improve their
big man situation. DJ White is a guy
with four years of college
experience, and that should be a big
factor in why the Grizzlies take
him. They need help right away. and
White should be able to provide that
help. He's a big guy, so he should
have little trouble against most NBA
defenders. |
|
29 |
 |
Courtney Lee |
SG |
Western Kentucky |
|
The Detroit Pistons rank among the
oldest teams in the NBA. They need a
guy who can provide a spark off the
bench, give some life to all the
older guys. Courtney Lee is an
athletic guy who can score in a
variety of ways. Detroit's trademark
is defense, Lee will provide some
instant offense off the bench. |
|
30 |
 |
Danny Green |
SG |
North Carolina |
|
Bruce Bowen has given some great
years to the Spurs, but now it's
time to move on. Danny Green looks
to fill the shoes of the defensive
minded Bowen. Green will be able to
run the floor with the likes of Tony
Parker, so he should help instantly
on the break. He will be a great
asset to the Spurs. |
